How to Get to the Viking Village from Bergen Without a Car

Every car-free route from Bergen to Njardarheimr in Gudvangen: train and bus via Voss, express bus, Flåm Railway and boat, Norway in a Nutshell. Winter times and costs.

Updated October 2026

Yes, you can reach Njardarheimr, the Viking village in Gudvangen, from Bergen without a car all year: take the train to Voss, then the 10 a.m. VY456 bus, which reaches Gudvangen at 11:05 a.m. and must be booked by the day before. From November to March the village is open only 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., so in winter the harder part is getting back. If you’d rather not plan any of it, the Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway day tour picks you up in Bergen.

The One Fact That Shapes Every Plan: Village Opening Hours

Njardarheimr’s own 2026 schedule says the village is open every day 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. from 1 April to 31 October, and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. from 1 November to 31 March. It is closed on 24 and 25 December. Gate prices for 2026 are NOK 260 for adults (16 and over), NOK 120 for children aged 4 to 15 and NOK 695 for a family (two adults and their own children; sold at the entrance only), and under-4s go free. The 45-minute guided “Viking Experience” is included in the ticket. You don’t need to book: tickets are always sold at the gate. Pets aren’t allowed inside.

In summer, almost any bus or boat combination gives you enough time. In winter you have a window of about three hours that starts after the first bus arrives and ends long before the last boat leaves. That is why so many winter DIY plans fail, and why the plans below work backward from 2 p.m.

visitBergen’s listing shows different gate prices (NOK 265, 110 and 675). We use the village’s own figures; check at the gate.

Route 1 (Our Pick): Train to Voss + the VY456 “Norway’s best” Bus

This is the backbone of car-free Gudvangen. It runs every day of the year on a fixed timetable that is easy to remember.

The Bus Timetable (Norway’s Best, All Year)

MorningAfternoon
Departs Voss (Stop A, outside the station)10 a.m.4 p.m.
Vinje10:25 a.m.4:25 p.m.
Arrives Gudvangen (Stop H, median strip by the ferry terminal)11:05 a.m.5:05 p.m.
Departs Gudvangen11:40 a.m.5:15 p.m.
Vinje12:15 p.m.5:50 p.m.
Arrives Voss12:45 p.m.6:20 p.m.

Vy operates the buses, branded “VY456 Norway’s best”. Norway’s Best says departures run only when tickets are booked in advance, no later than the day before travel, so don’t turn up at Voss expecting to buy on board. Several coaches from different companies park at Gudvangen at the same time; check the sign before you board. Selected departures continue to Flåm, which matters for loop trips.

Getting to Voss by Train (Vy R40 / F4)

Vy’s R40 local line runs Bergen–Voss–Myrdal through the day, and the ride to Voss takes about 1 hour 10 minutes. For the timetable change on 13 December 2026, Vy says there are “no changes to the service” on R40 but advises checking the journey planner for minor adjustments. These morning trains connected with the 10 a.m. bus in last winter’s (2025–26) timetable; check the Vy app for your date:

Bergen departsVoss arrivesBuffer for the 10 a.m. busNotes
7:04 a.m.8:18 a.m.1 hour 42 minutesSafe; time for coffee in Voss
7:46 a.m.9:04 a.m.56 minutesMonday to Friday only
8:29 a.m.9:41 a.m.19 minutesThe usual connection; tight if the train is late

The long-distance F4 train toward Oslo is another option: in autumn 2026 it left Bergen at 8:08 a.m. and reached Voss at 9:17 a.m. Seat reservation is compulsory on the F4, so book a ticket with a seat.

Our advice: take the 7:46 a.m. (weekdays) or the 7:04 a.m. A 19-minute buffer on a single-track mountain line in January is optimistic.

Step by Step

  1. Buy the train ticket from Bergen to Voss in the Vy app or on vy.no. Prices vary with demand, so earlier is usually cheaper.
  2. Book the VY456 bus from Voss to Gudvangen on norwaysbest.com by the day before.
  3. Leave Voss station and walk to Stop A at the bus terminal right outside.
  4. Sit on the left side for the best views down the Nærøydalen valley.
  5. Get off at Gudvangen Stop H (by the ferry terminal) at 11:05 a.m.
  6. Walk to Njardarheimr, a few minutes on foot through the village.

How Long You Get

  • Winter: arrive at 11:05 a.m., reach the gate around 11:15 a.m., and the village closes at 2 p.m. That gives you about 2 hours 45 minutes, enough for the guided Viking Experience, lunch and a turn at axe throwing.
  • Summer: from 11:05 a.m. to 6 p.m. is up to 6 hours 50 minutes, far more than you need. Most visitors find 2 to 3 hours plenty.

Route 2: The Direct Vy Express Bus (VY450 Bergen–Oslo)

Vy’s VY450 express runs Bergen–Voss–Gudvangen–Flåm–Lærdal–Fagernes–Oslo, with day and night departures. Fjord Norway’s listing says the full journey takes around 9 hours 45 minutes and the night departures stop at Oslo Airport. It is the only option from Bergen bus station with no change.

  • Times (third-party data): Omio and Rome2rio list Bergen bus station 9 a.m. → Gudvangen E16 about 11:22 a.m., and 11 a.m. → about 1:41 p.m. (2026 dates). Toward Bergen, there is a 3:28 p.m. from Gudvangen E16 arriving at 6:05 p.m. (October 2026). The two sites don’t agree on how many buses run each day, so check the vy.no journey planner for your date.
  • Booking: Fjord Norway says the express only calls at stops for which tickets have been bought in advance. Book ahead in the Vy app or on vy.no, or the bus may not stop.
  • Stop name: “Gudvangen E16” (also listed as “E16 / Fv241”) is on the main road, not at the quay; forum regulars put it 5 to 10 minutes’ walk from the ferry quay.
  • Downsides: the 9 a.m. arriving about 11:22 a.m. works. The 11 a.m. arriving about 1:41 p.m. is no use in winter, because the village shuts at 2 p.m. The double-deckers have wifi and restrooms, but the timetable is built for Oslo traffic.

Verdict: a good one-way link, for example Bergen to Gudvangen and then on to Flåm. Treat it as Plan B for the return, not as the backbone.

Route 3: Via Myrdal, the Flåm Railway and the Nærøyfjord Boat

This is the scenic route, and it is Norway in a Nutshell in reverse. You ride the Bergen Railway to Myrdal, take the Flåm Railway down to Flåm, then go by boat (2 hours) or shuttle bus (20 minutes) to Gudvangen.

The 2:45 p.m. from Flåm arrives at 4:45 p.m., almost three hours after the winter village has shut. In winter only the 9:30 a.m. boat works for a village visit, and you can’t reach Flåm by 9:30 a.m. from Bergen on the same morning. In winter, the boat route means a night in Flåm. You can book the Gudvangen Nærøyfjord cruise on GetYourGuide or direct with Norway’s Best.

The operator warns that the winter route can change at short notice. If it does, the boat runs a return trip from Flåm with a connecting bus to and from Gudvangen. Intermediate stops (Aurland, Undredal) must be booked in advance.

Summer Boat Pattern (1 July to 31 August 2026, as Published)

From Flåm: 9:30 a.m., 10:15 a.m., 12 noon, 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. From Gudvangen: 9 a.m., 12:10 p.m., 1:15 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Norway’s Best has already loaded its April-to-October 2027 periods; check the exact 2027 times before you book. The older Lustrabaatane boat also runs Flåm–Gudvangen (visitBergen lists 1 June to 31 August: 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. in both directions; NOK 550 adult one way, NOK 275 child, NOK 815 adult return). On GetYourGuide it is the classic Nærøyfjord cruise from Flåm.

Shuttle Bus Flåm ⇄ Gudvangen (Norway’s Best)

  • About 20 minutes through the Gudvanga tunnel. It leaves Flåm from Stop A/B and Gudvangen from Stop H.
  • 16–31 October 2026: Flåm 10:15 a.m., 11:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., arriving Gudvangen 20 minutes later; Gudvangen 10:45 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 1:45 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., arriving Flåm 20 minutes later.
  • Seats are limited and you must travel on the departure printed on your ticket. Children aged 0 to 3 need a (free) seat booked.
  • Norway’s Best has a separate period for November 2026 to March 2027; check the shuttle timetable before you rely on a 1:45 p.m. departure.

Flåm Railway (Flåmsbana)

  • Winter: Vy’s timetable to 12 December 2026 has departures from Flåm at 9 a.m., 11:45 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 4:50 p.m., each taking under an hour to Myrdal, and from Myrdal at 10:15 a.m., 1:15 p.m., 3:39 p.m. and 6:05 p.m. Check the timetable from 13 December for your date. There are fewer departures on 24, 25 and 31 December.
  • October 2026: from Flåm at 8:20 a.m., 9:35 a.m., 10:50 a.m., 12:10 p.m., 2:45 p.m. and 4 p.m.; from Myrdal at 9:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m., 12:06 p.m., 1:24 p.m., 3:55 p.m. and 5:09 p.m.
  • Fare: Vy lists adult singles from NOK 399 in winter. Children aged 6 to 17 pay half.

You get the Vikings, the Nærøydalen valley and the Flåm Railway in one daylight loop, and you are back in Bergen for dinner. The one thing this loop leaves out is the Nærøyfjord cruise. If the cruise matters more, use the overnight plan below, or see our hour-by-hour winter day with the cruise.

Route 4: Norway in a Nutshell (Fjord Tours): Does It Stop at the Village?

Norway in a Nutshell is a self-guided package of train, bus and boat tickets sold by Fjord Tours, from NOK 2,698 per adult (visitBergen lists children under 16 at NOK 1,204). It runs all year and can start in Oslo, Bergen, Flåm, Voss or Geilo. Every version passes through Gudvangen, because that is where the boat meets the bus. It isn’t sold on GetYourGuide.

The catch: the standard one-day round trip from Bergen gives you only the bus-to-boat connection in Gudvangen, which travelers report as around 40 to 55 minutes. That is enough for a waffle, not for the Vikings. To fit in the village:

  • Book a version with an overnight in Gudvangen or Flåm; Fjord Tours offers extra nights in both.
  • Fjord Tours also lists a “Viking Village Njardarheim in Gudvangen” (2 hours) activity on its Gudvangen pages. Check whether the booking lets you add it with a later boat or bus.
  • In winter, ask Fjord Tours to put you on the 9:30 a.m. boat from Flåm after a night in Flåm, arriving in Gudvangen at 11:30 a.m., with the bus to Voss later in the day.

Verdict: Norway in a Nutshell gives you one ticket but little time at the village. If the Vikings are your main reason to go, Route 1 or a guided tour does it better and for less.

Route 5: Guided Day Tours from Bergen (No Changes, Village Time Included)

If you’d rather nobody in your group studied a bus timetable in the dark, a tour is the simple answer, especially in winter.

For a full side-by-side, see Viking village tours from Bergen compared.

Route 6: From Flåm, Voss, Aurland or Sogndal (Day Visitors)

  • From Flåm: Norway’s Best sells Viking Village and bus from and to Flåm (from NOK 550, with the shuttle both ways and village entry) and Viking Village and Fjord Cruise Nærøyfjord (from NOK 1,020, the boat one way and the bus the other). Its own advice is to match the departure times to how long you want in Gudvangen.
  • From Voss: VY456 at 10 a.m., back at 5:15 p.m. (or 11:40 a.m. if you only want a quick look).
  • From Aurland: the winter boat calls at Aurland at 9:55 a.m. (book the stop in advance) and reaches Gudvangen at 11:30 a.m.
  • From Sogndal or Lærdal: the VY450 express passes through Lærdal, Aurland and Flåm to Gudvangen E16. Check times on vy.no.

Route 7: Oslo → Gudvangen Without a Car

  • Fastest in daylight: in autumn 2026 the F4 left Oslo S at 6:25 a.m. for Myrdal (11:15 a.m.), or at 8:25 a.m. (Myrdal 1:04 p.m.). Then take the Flåm Railway down and the shuttle or boat to Gudvangen.
  • In winter the earliest you reach Flåm is around 2:05 p.m. (on the 1:15 p.m. from Myrdal), after the village closes. Sleep in Flåm, take the 9:30 a.m. boat and visit the village from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. the next day. Then continue to Bergen on the 5:15 p.m. VY456 bus to Voss.
  • Summer: Oslo 6:25 a.m. → Myrdal 11:15 a.m. → Flåm Railway → Flåm in the early afternoon → shuttle to Gudvangen. That leaves more than three hours before the 6 p.m. closing. Stay overnight in Gudvangen or continue to Voss or Bergen.
  • By bus: the VY450 between Oslo and Bergen stops at Gudvangen E16 (about 9 hours 45 minutes end to end). Long, but no changes.

Route 8: Cruise Passengers (Bergen and Flåm Ports)

  • Docked in Flåm: the easiest port call. Take the 20-minute shuttle bus (or the NOK 550 village and bus package). Allow at least 2.5 hours, plus an hour’s buffer before all-aboard.
  • Docked in Bergen: a DIY trip takes about 2 hours 40 minutes each way, so it only works on long port days of 10 hours or more. A guided tour from Bergen is safer, because operators plan around traffic, but check the return time against all-aboard yourself.

Taxi, Cycling and Hitchhiking

  • Taxi from Voss to Gudvangen (about 47 km, or 29 miles; about 45 minutes): Rome2rio estimates $90–110, and an older forum quote put it near NOK 1,500, so budget for the higher end and book Voss Taxi ahead. Split between four people, it is a reasonable rescue if you miss the bus.
  • Cycling: not possible from Flåm. The Gudvanga tunnel on the E16 is 11,428 meters (about 7 miles) long, Norway’s third-longest road tunnel, opened on 17 December 1991. The cycletourer.co.uk tunnel list, based on Statens vegvesen bans, marks it closed to cyclists and advises taking the bus or ferry. NRK Vestland reported the tunnel being closed for a Friday afternoon because of cyclists in dark clothing inside it, and police were sent to get them out. NRK also reports that cycling is banned in 479 of Norway’s 1,265 road tunnels. From Voss, the E16 also has long tunnels. Don’t try it.
  • Hitchhiking: legal, but unreliable on a highway full of tunnels in winter darkness. We don’t recommend it.

Luggage, Accessibility, Kids and Dogs

  • Luggage: Vy says Voss station has luggage storage. Norway’s Best has self-service lockers outside the Flåm visitor center. Luggage shelves on the boat are unattended. Fjord Tours sells luggage transfer between Oslo and Bergen. With big suitcases, store them in Bergen and travel light.
  • Wheelchair users: the village says the whole site is wheelchair-friendly and most activities are accessible. The small historic houses have high thresholds. Carers get in free with a companion certificate, and accessible restrooms are near the entrance. The electric boat has a universal design, but the operator can swap vessels at short notice and other boats may be less accessible.
  • Kids: under-4s are free at the village, but they need a free seat booked on the Flåm shuttle. About 2 hours 40 minutes each way is manageable with children.
  • Dogs: allowed on the boat and the shuttle, not inside the village.

Where to Stay to Make It Easy

  • Gudvangen: wake up by the fjord and walk to the village at opening time. It is the best base for a slow visit, and for a dark-sky night if the northern lights are forecast. Gudvangen Fjordtell and Gudvangen Budget Hotel are a short walk from the gate.
  • Flåm: the only way to catch the winter 9:30 a.m. boat, and it has the most restaurants. Fretheim Hotel and Flåmsbrygga are by the station and the quay.
  • Voss: a rail hub with the Voss Gondol next to the station, and from there you can catch the 10 a.m. bus without an early train from Bergen.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get from Bergen to Gudvangen Viking Village without a car?

Take the Vy train from Bergen to Voss (about 1 hour 10 minutes), then the Norway’s Best VY456 bus at 10 a.m. from Voss Stop A. It arrives in Gudvangen at 11:05 a.m., a short walk from Njardarheimr. The bus runs daily all year but must be booked by the day before.

Is there a direct bus from Bergen to Gudvangen?

Yes. Vy’s VY450 Bergen–Oslo express stops at “Gudvangen E16”. Third-party sites list a 9 a.m. from Bergen bus station arriving around 11:22 a.m. Book in advance, because the express only calls at stops with booked passengers, and check the winter 2026–27 times on vy.no before relying on it.

How long does it take to get from Bergen to the Viking village by public transport?

About 2 hours 40 minutes via Voss (Bergen 8:29 a.m. → Voss 9:41 a.m. → Gudvangen 11:05 a.m. in last winter’s timetable), or around 2 hours 20 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes on the direct VY450 express. The scenic route via Myrdal, the Flåm Railway and the Nærøyfjord boat takes 4 to 5 hours or more.

Does Norway in a Nutshell stop at the Viking village?

It passes through Gudvangen, but the standard one-day round trip from Bergen leaves only a short bus-to-boat connection there, which isn’t enough for the village. Book a Fjord Tours version with an overnight in Gudvangen or Flåm, or a later boat, to get two to three hours at Njardarheimr.

Can I visit the Viking village in winter without a car?

Yes. Take the 10 a.m. bus from Voss to arrive at 11:05 a.m.; the village is open 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. from November to March. Then return via the Flåm Railway loop or the 5:15 p.m. bus to Voss. The winter Nærøyfjord boat only fits if you sleep in Flåm.

What is the Voss to Gudvangen bus timetable?

The Norway’s Best VY456 bus leaves Voss at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (arriving in Gudvangen at 11:05 a.m. and 5:05 p.m.). It returns from Gudvangen at 11:40 a.m. and 5:15 p.m. (arriving in Voss at 12:45 p.m. and 6:20 p.m.). It runs every day all year, and tickets must be booked no later than the day before.

How do I get from Flåm to Gudvangen?

Take the Norway’s Best shuttle bus (about 20 minutes, from Stop A/B in Flåm to Stop H in Gudvangen) or the two-hour Nærøyfjord cruise. Winter boats leave Flåm at 9:30 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Norway’s Best also sells a Viking village and shuttle package from NOK 550.

How far is the Viking village from the Gudvangen ferry quay?

A few minutes on foot from the quay and bus Stop H. The Nærøyfjorden World Heritage Park puts Gudvangen at about 90 residents, so you can’t really get lost. The “Gudvangen E16” express-bus stop is about 5 to 10 minutes’ walk from the quay.

How much does it cost to visit the Viking village without a car?

Entry is NOK 260 per adult (NOK 120 for children aged 4 to 15). Going out and back via Voss is the cheapest option. A full winter loop with the boat and the Flåm Railway comes to about NOK 1,885–2,325 by our estimate. Norway in a Nutshell starts at NOK 2,698, and guided tours start from $395.

How do I get from Oslo to Gudvangen without a car?

Take the Bergen Railway to Myrdal, the Flåm Railway to Flåm, then the shuttle bus or boat to Gudvangen. In winter you arrive after the village closes, so sleep in Flåm and take the 9:30 a.m. boat the next morning. The VY450 express bus from Oslo also stops at Gudvangen E16.

Can I cycle to Gudvangen from Flåm?

No. The 11.4 km (7-mile) Gudvanga tunnel on the E16 between Flåm and Gudvangen is closed to cyclists. NRK Vestland reported the tunnel being closed while police removed cyclists in dark clothing. Take the shuttle bus, which takes about 20 minutes, or the fjord boat.

Do I need to book Viking village tickets in advance?

No. The village says tickets can always be bought at the entrance, and the family ticket (NOK 695) is sold only at the gate. What you do need to book is the transport: the VY456 bus by the day before, Flåm shuttle seats and, in summer, Flåm Railway seats.

How We Checked

We checked these sources in October 2026: Njardarheimr’s (Viking Valley’s) practical-information page for 2026 hours and prices; Norway’s Best pages for the Voss–Gudvangen bus, the Flåm–Gudvangen shuttle, the Nærøyfjord cruise (16 October 2026 to 31 March 2027), the village packages and the Flåm Railway; Vy’s timetable-change notice for 13 December 2026 and its autumn 2026 F4 timetable; Fjord Tours’ Norway in a Nutshell page; and visitBergen listings. Vy’s 2026–27 R40 timetable wasn’t available yet, so the Bergen–Voss times use the 2025–26 winter timetable, which Vy says is unchanged in service. Third-party data (Omio, Rome2rio, forums) is marked wherever we use it. Check everything in the operator apps before you travel.

We earn a commission on some bookings made through links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It doesn’t change our recommendation, which for most people is a public bus.
