Best Time to Visit Norwegian Fjords: Month-by-Month Guide

Discover the best time to visit the Norwegian fjords, with a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds, waterfalls, cruises and Bergen, Flåm and Nærøyfjord trips.

Updated January 0001

The Norwegian fjords don’t have a single “best” season.

Visit in May and you can see powerful waterfalls fed by melting mountain snow. Come in June and you get very long days for exploring. July and August offer the widest choice of tours but also bigger crowds. September brings quieter fjords and early autumn colour, while winter transforms places such as Flåm and Nærøyfjord into snowy landscapes.

For most first-time visitors travelling from Bergen, late May through September offers the easiest combination of long daylight, extensive transport options and access to popular fjord attractions.

What Is the Best Month to Visit?

If you want the easiest all-round trip, June is difficult to beat.

By June, days are very long, landscapes are green, waterfalls are active and most major tours are running.

May and September can be better choices for travellers who value fewer visitors.

March

March is still winter in many fjord areas.

Expect snow on the mountains, cold conditions, relatively few tourists and fewer seasonal activities.

April

April is a transition month.

Winter may remain visible in the mountains while lower elevations move towards spring.

May

May is one of the most appealing months for fjord travel.

Snowmelt feeds waterfalls, landscapes become green and visitor numbers are generally lower than during peak summer.

May is especially good for Nærøyfjord cruises, Bergen-based fjord excursions, waterfalls and photography.

June

June is arguably the strongest all-round month for a first visit.

Summer is established, landscapes are intensely green and daylight lasts late into the evening.

This is particularly useful for long Bergen trips combining Flåm, Nærøyfjord and Gudvangen. Our Bergen to Flåm day-trip guide covers how to build that route.

July

July is peak fjord season.

You can expect long daylight, summer temperatures, extensive transport schedules and plenty of organised tours.

The trade-off is more people and greater competition for popular departure times.

August

August still offers the advantages of summer, especially during the first half of the month.

As the month progresses, the feeling gradually shifts away from high summer.

September

September is one of the most attractive alternatives to peak summer.

The summer rush begins to ease while many fjord experiences remain available.

It is especially good for photography, quieter Flåm visits and Bergen city + fjord combinations.

October

October takes you deeper into autumn, with colourful hillsides and fewer visitors.

Expect shorter daylight, fewer tour departures and cooler conditions.

November to February

Winter offers snow-covered mountains, quieter fjords and few visitors, but also limited daylight, fewer departures and more weather uncertainty. In mid-December the inner fjords get under six hours of daylight, and in long cold spells ice can close the inner Nærøyfjord, when the boats from Flåm take another route.

Spring vs Summer vs Autumn vs Winter

Spring: April–May

Best for waterfalls and fewer crowds.

Summer: June–August

Best for maximum access and easy planning.

Autumn: September–October

Best for colour and fewer people.

Winter: November–March

Best for snow and atmosphere.

Best Time for Nærøyfjord

For most visitors, May through September is the easiest period for Nærøyfjord.

May brings strong waterfalls, June long days, July–August maximum convenience and September fewer people and early autumn colour.

For a day trip from Bergen, the Bergen Viking Village, Nærøyfjord Cruise & Flåm Railway tour pairs the cruise with the railway and the Viking Village, and it swaps the summer waterfall stop for a stop in Voss on winter departures. Our guide to Nærøyfjord from Bergen covers the routes in full.

Best Time to Visit Flåm

Choose May for spring scenery, June for long days, July for maximum activity choice, September for fewer visitors and winter for snow and a quieter atmosphere.

Best Time to Visit Gudvangen and the Viking Village

For most travellers, visit during the main sightseeing season when it is easy to combine Gudvangen with Nærøyfjord, Flåm and Bergen.

Late spring and early autumn can be attractive if you want fewer visitors. The village itself is open all year except December 24 and 25, but its hours are much shorter in winter: in 2026, 10:00 to 18:00 from April 1 to October 31 and 10:30 to 14:00 from November 1 to March 31. Our guide to the best time to visit the Bergen Viking Village covers the village hours, daylight and weather for that specific day trip, and our Gudvangen Viking Village guide covers the village itself.

Best Time for Waterfalls

Choose late spring and early summer.

May is especially appealing because you may get snowy mountain tops, green lower valleys and powerful waterfalls in the same landscape.

Best Time for Fewer Crowds

Consider:

  • May
  • September
  • October

Winter is quieter still, but you sacrifice more daylight and tourism infrastructure.

Final Thoughts

There is no month when the Norwegian fjords suddenly become “bad”. The experience changes with the season.

Spring makes the waterfalls roar. Summer opens up the widest range of journeys. Autumn colours the mountainsides. Winter covers the landscape in snow and removes much of the summer bustle.

For a first trip based in Bergen, May through September is the easiest window, with June offering an especially good balance.
