What Is Flåm Like?

Flåm is one of Norway’s best-known fjord tourism centres, and the more developed of the two villages. It has the Flåm Railway station (one of the steepest standard-gauge railways in the world), shops, restaurants and considerably more accommodation if you want to stay overnight rather than pass through.

Its importance comes from the number of experiences and transport routes concentrated around it. From Flåm you can ride the Flåm Railway, cruise through Nærøyfjord, visit Aurland, travel up to the Stegastein viewpoint (the Stegastein Viewpoint Scenic Bus Tour leaves from Flåm) and continue towards Bergen or Oslo.

What Is Gudvangen Like?

Gudvangen is much smaller and quieter. It sits at the innermost point of the Nærøyfjord, part of the West Norwegian Fjords UNESCO World Heritage Site, surrounded by steep mountains, and that location is its biggest advantage.

It is also home to Njardarheimr, the reconstructed, staffed Viking-age village, with longhouses, a working forge, animal pens and a small harbour with reconstructed ships. That gives Gudvangen something Flåm lacks: a substantial cultural attraction based on Viking history.

The Flåm Railway connects Flåm with Myrdal, which makes it possible to travel from Bergen via Myrdal to Flåm and then continue through Nærøyfjord.

Yes, mainly because of its dramatic location.
